Day 28 - Report from ICU

From Joe: Well, as you may know from the day 22 blog, Mom didn't get the Neulasta shot this round. It was a risk, as the Neulasta is meant to boost her immune system, but she tried to go without it to avoid the severe bone and muscle aches. She had been feeling better less crappy (for lack of a better term), but she would need to get her blood checked twice a week.

This morning, she went in to get her blood work to make sure that her white blood cell count was okay. It turns out, it wasn't - she had a 0.2 count (<4.0 is bad!) which means that she essentially had no immune system. For this, she had to go to the emergency room where they immediately took her temperature and blood pressure. She had a high temp (which is rare for chemo patients) and an extremely low blood pressure (60/40). The ER doctors figured (and verified with more tests) that she had developed sepsis.

She was then transferred to the Intensive Care Unit, where she had another port installed in her chest. At one point, she had at least 7 different IV bags pushing liquids through her. She is so tough, that she had the port put in without being knocked out - amazing! Her blood pressure has since returned to normal, but she will remain in ICU until her white blood cell count and sepsis stabilize. There is a chance that she may be able to return home tomorrow.

We feel truly blessed that the doctors were able to stabilize her so quickly. It was scary for a little while, but God was watching out for her. Please continue to keep her in your prayers.

Dad is spending the night with her in ICU, but of course Mom has already made him run home to grab the camera. I'm sure that she will be back to posting pictures of her new port as soon as she returns home!

Through everything, she continues to have a great, positive attitude. She can see how many people visit this blog every day and from what parts of the country and world the visitors are coming from. I really think that seeing the tremendous support of the people that read this helps keep her spirits high!
